The Mouth of Mormo

 I wrote a dungeon.  It's about 25 rooms.

It still needs work, but I'm getting bored of it and I need to post it now or else it'll join the scrapheap of all of my unfinished projects.

BEHOLD!

Here's the regular version: HERE.

And here's a jumbo version HERE.

The jumbo version has a bunch of essays and rants, mostly directed to new OSR DMs but also just anything I might have thought was useful at 2 am when I was writing them.

  1. Whoa. I was about to run Lair of the Lamb for the first time next week. Do you think I should run this instead? I have never played or run OSR and neither have my players.

    1. Maybe! This one definitely has more instructions for a new DM. But both adventures are simple enough that they could be used. Which one looks cooler?

    2. In favor of Lair:
      1. It has been around a while and I see positive reviews that say it is a good OSR intro. I also noted that you made a few revisions that likely means it is more refined.
      2. I enjoy the theme of a single horrific monster chasing you around.
      3. More really weird stuff, like a throne that gives you a lobster hand.

      In favor of Mormo:
      1. It feels like more of the rooms contribute to the story or gameplay. Reading Lair, I found myself wondering what the point of something like 17 ALTAR? It seems like it would mostly just kill someone unfamiliar with yellow mold and give them a candle.
      2. Mormo has more of a flow to it. In Lair, it looks like, if I am running just the first half, players could escape quickly or spend a ton of time wandering depending on which direction they take. But maybe that randomness is better for experiencing an OSR style dungeon?
      3. The increased likelihood of death early on due to the lamb might put off players.

  3. As I was reading, I could tell that this was a new core text for the OSR. (You can't keep getting away with it!)

    1. Thank you! I got a redraw maps and edit it, though.

    2. I'm going to work on the basement level first, though.

  4. Notice that the jumbo version has a slightly differently implemented version of the Underclock than the original blog post. Been using that version in my current campaign but think I might take this version for a spin.

    1. I've never written a rule that I thought I couldn't improve a year later. I like counting to twelve because hey--it's a clock with 12 hours.

  5. I don't have time to read it now (my stupid job takes up my time during the day - who do they think they are?!?). But I'll thank you now for what I'm sure will be a great read!

  6. Boy are you ever back. Thanks Arnold! It looks great and shall replace me reading a book tonight!
